沒有文字的民族，歌唱和舞蹈不只是串聯生活和祭典的儀軌，歌唱與舞蹈內涵裡，阿美族人藉著祭典的儀式，重溫祖先的教誨，藉著牽手舞蹈集體複習祖先代代相傳有關信仰、神靈、祭儀、生活習俗、社會組織、部落制度等……….，例如他們的祭儀，在播種祭時，就有播種祭之歌，除草祭就會有除草祭之歌，除蟲祭也有除蟲祭之歌，這些歌謠都在古老的工作歌裡傳承下來，其中包含召喚歌、巫師祈福歌、田間工作歌、工作完工歌、即興歌、歡樂歌、乞雨歌……………等。
阿美族的歌謠形式多變而且豐富，音域寬廣，採自由對位的複音唱法，節奏容易辨識，也容易讓人朗朗上口，且隨著歌聲而起舞。
阿美族的高五，和他們的服飾一般，殷地域、因部落而有其變化。
日據時代研究台灣原住民族音樂的著名學者黑澤隆朝，在一九七三年，曾經著有『台灣高砂族的音樂』一書，把台灣原住民族的音樂分成七個類型
以上分析，可以概略地看出台灣原住民族生活的重點。國民政府來台後，另一研究台灣原住民族音樂的台灣學者呂炳川先生，把音樂分為四類。
