阿美族對大自然十分崇拜，相信有人也有鬼，宇宙大地之間還充滿各類大自然的神靈，阿美族基本的信仰有如下基本概念：
太陽：被稱為ina是母親的意思：太陽創造天地，是最高神祇，也是女神Foongi本體；以女神來象徵最高神明，也是阿美族母系社會的起源。
月亮∼被稱為Mema是父親的意思：月亮創造五穀，是男神malataw的本體。
阿美族人相信一切的福禍操之在神的手上。女神負責人類的生死，性別、壽命、健康和民族的類別，男神則主管動植物、土地、礦物、水氣雲嵐…等。
