泰雅族的聚落分佈非常廣，泰雅族的傳統領域在今日南投縣仁愛鄉、花蓮縣萬榮鄉以北的中央山脈和雪山山脈的海拔500-2500公尺的廣大面積上，分佈的面積佔了山區面積的三分之一多。
泰雅族究竟從處來，至今雖然無定論，但從居地分佈之廣，判斷可能與早期發展受到許多阻力有關，學者林朝棨認為在6000年前，泰雅族便首先在台灣的西部平原，再轉而遷入西部的山岳地區。泰雅族內部族群分類複雜，相互之間文化差異極大，但文化中最重要的部分∼紋面習俗，卻是相同的，而且完整地保存，紋面習俗又與泰雅整個民族的崇法制度和風俗信仰有著密切的關連。
泰雅族是台灣中部和北部山嶽的守護者，獨立、剽悍、崇尚武勇，擁有激烈不屈服的性格，因此日本殖民統治將泰雅族稱為『最劣等的凶番』，至今泰雅族在其傳統領域生活，對台灣山嶽資源的利用和保護，有著不可抹滅的貢獻。
