泰雅族相信人要走向永生的世界，須通過橋。在橋的這一頭有七色彩虹橋日夜把關，無人能夠僥倖過關。把關者的任務是審判人們在世時的行為與心思。
彩虹橋高大壯觀與天頂相接，非常亮麗。高掛天空現弧形的弓一般。而在橋的下深淵，有一條怒濤澎湃的大河穿越，裡面滿佈鱷魚和巨蟒。
橋的起點，有一棟等待著審判人們生前邪惡與善良的房間，審判者身份是死亡的人靈魂擔任，都是過去在人世間的良善正義的人。
審判者立刻可以知道過橋者究竟是不是好人，不論男人或女人，良善就讓他們通過。若靈魂被懷疑，會過橋之前，在手指上塗炭灰，不會脫落的表示是良善的人，便會讓他走上彩虹橋，走向人生的終點之人永生的靈界境地。反過來說，若手指頭的炭灰脫落了，那就判定是行為頑劣，就不能通過彩虹橋了，得走彩虹橋的旁邊另外一條，充滿莖棘的一條艱辛之路，到處佈滿有黏人的有毒植物，和許多的可怕的吸血蟲。現今仍存在的紋面老人相信臉上保有紋面符碼是順利與祖先會和的通行證。而現在仍然活著，能夠見證『擁有神話化石』的紋面老人都已活過一個世紀，但卻幾近凋零，泰雅族神話精神的活化石也隨著他們的故去而消逝。
