傳說在很早，大地只有動植物，人類還沒有誕生。野草搖曳生姿，花朵四周爭奇鬥豔，陽光曬遍大地，一切那麼地安詳美麗。
突然天空出現一朵金色的葫蘆花，緩緩地飄落原野上，葫蘆花瓣裡爬出一隻小蟲，慢慢地長成一個高大強壯的男孩。
林木花草驚訝地叫著『布農、布農』，野獸飛禽四處奔告：『Bunun,Bunun』。
男孩在山中到處複奔馳，採摘野生的果實充飢，與昆蟲野獸為友。
黑夜來臨，動物都休息了，男孩數著天上星星，心中感到十分寂寞，為了打發等待天明的時間，摘下樹葉編成花冠，有一天決定帶著花冠爬到山頂，對太陽說話。
清晨太陽一出現，男孩高舉雙臂對著太陽說：『感謝您送我到玉山，大地雖然美麗，我卻孤獨寂寞，請給我一個溫柔的玩伴吧！』這時空中掉下一只陶鍋，並傳出：『把鍋燒熱，上面蓋著食物，你會得到幫助的。』回到山林裡，男孩每天砍柴，努力把鍋燒得熱烘烘的，夜晚燒熱的陶鍋映照山林景色十分美麗。有一天陶鍋突然『啪啦』一聲裂開，男孩看見陶鍋走出一個美麗的女孩，對他說：『我來了，我們一起在這美麗山林中開墾吧！』草木森林，蟲魚鳥獸高興地慶賀：『布農，Bunun』大夥兒歡喜高聲叫著，後來兩人結合生下許多小孩，他們的後代就叫做『布農』。
