噶瑪蘭族人栽麻織布為衣，噶瑪蘭族擅長紡織與刺繡，他們使用移動式水平背帶織布機，以苧麻為主要原料，夾織各色的毛線。噶瑪蘭族更以樹皮或香蕉樹幹抽絲，再與麻線混織成禦寒蔽體的衣服。
噶瑪蘭族最珍貴的傳統技藝為香蕉絲編織，是由香蕉樹取其假莖瓣曬乾撕成蕉絲的一種編織技藝。
花蓮新社的噶瑪蘭婦女目前仍保存著傳統的香蕉絲織布法，相當罕見。這是噶瑪蘭人的傳統衣著，不過在噶瑪蘭族原鄉蘭陽平原早已經成為絕響。香蕉絲織布已成為噶瑪蘭族文化復振的圖騰，向世人證實噶瑪蘭人的真實存在。噶瑪蘭族人香蕉絲紡織的流程為理經、上架、纏梭、織布等。
