卑南族及終於台東縱谷南方平原上，一部份分散居住於恆春半島上。「卑南」之名是取自本族八大社中最強盛的「卑南社」。分佈在台東縣卑南鄉台東市一帶的卑南族，當時是台灣原住民中的一個小族。雖然人口不多，然而卻是一個不可忽視的強悍民族，卑南族大頭目卑納來（Pinarai）以勇猛機制馳名，歷史尚稱他為「卑南王」，他從山地原住民徵粟（小米）與肉類，向海岸原住民徵收魚貝類。
富於尚武的精神，曾經以「卑南王」之稱號，支配著台東縱谷平原並發號施令，聲勢浩大。
卑南族鄰近的阿美族及排灣族常以「巴那巴那樣」（Panapanayan）來稱呼卑南族族人，這個族名後來沒有通行。
一則卑南族海外來源說是這樣敘述的：古時候由南方海上乘起竹筏而來的一對夫妻，在台東沿岸登陸。把手上的竹仗插在地面，長成茂盛的瑞竹，後來便以此為祖先發祥地。這對夫妻生了兩個兒子，哥哥便是知本的祖先，弟弟變成卑南族附近的開山鼻祖。知本和卑南的人口日益增加，知本是兄長的聚落，所以也較有勢力。後來反而是卑南族比較繁榮，於是權勢也逐漸移到卑南這個地方了。
早期卑南族部落統稱為「八社番」，有八個主要部落，現在則有八社時部落，故聚落的平字也有其特別意義。以知本、南王兩大社群為代表。
