四步舞是魯凱族的重要舞蹈，，雙手形成張開的「人字」群舞的形態，舞蹈開始，任何人只要放開一隻手，就能容許任何人進入舞陣中，但舞蹈卻受影響。舞蹈進行可以是封閉的圓形，也可以是流動的人龍動線。
魯凱族四步舞有男女混在一起跳，和男女分開來跳兩種。舞蹈是儀式的一環，身份和年齡沒有嚴格的區分。若是男女男女混合一起跳，則男子在前女子接在後面，如果是男女分開跳，則男性在外圈女子在內圈，表示魯凱男子是要保護女性的意思。
