關於織布技術的來源，在賽夏族流傳廣泛的傳說故事內容如下 :
從前有一群賽夏族人到山上打獵，在他們上山的時候，有位龍女從海底出現，偷偷地幫他們煮飯，身穿整套的祭儀服裝，頭上還綁著頭飾，她在煮飯的時候不巧被其中一人發現，於是她就表示自己是奉父親命令來煮飯的 ，這群賽夏族人中有一名年青人仍然未婚，長老就做主把他們送作堆，讓他們結婚，婚後不久，這個女人帶著夫家親戚十人回到海底的娘家拜訪，這十位賽夏族人見到新娘娘家屋裡的東西，樣樣具全，連牆上的織布成品更是令人目眩神迷，等眾人回到山上時，便請她傳授織布技巧給部落婦女，龍女一口答應，慢慢的學習織布的人也越來越多了，就這樣她培養了二代的學徒，但第一代學徒卻有所保留，並沒有把全部的技術傳授給第二代學徒 ，龍女知道後就親自教導地二代學徒，並舉辦一場織布比賽，結果第一代竟然輸給第二代學徒，第一代學徒心有不甘，便開始說龍女的壞話，雙方互相爭吵不休，龍女心想這些忘恩負義的人既然不歡迎她，乾脆回到海底娘家去好了，於是，她只撇下一句話:「我走了之後，你們要學什麼也學不到了!」之後就頭也不回的走了。
