達悟族由於四面環海，所以祭典以『海祭』為主，海祭可分為『魚祭』、『船祭』、『小米祭』，族人都以歌舞狂歡去慶祝捕魚的豐收。
達悟族人採太陰陽曆，過著半漁半農的生活，尤其每年的宗教儀式皆配合捕撈飛魚活動，故被喻為『飛魚的民族』。族人在一、二月有開墾祭，這是農作物的播種儀式。三、四月間補飛魚時有飛魚祭。十月為捕魚季中較清閒的時節，其實有個陶器祭、餽贈季，陰曆十一月二八日上有豐收祭等。
