居住在四周環海的達悟族，漁船是他們賴以維生不可或缺的重要工具，因此，造船與船舟的下水禮是相當重要的。隨之而來的祭典、禁忌、漁團組織等，更形成了台灣原住民族中獨一無二的「船文化」，船隻製作之精密、精美，也是世界少有。
達悟族聚落的後方，就是原生林地帶，舉凡建屋、造船、日用器皿及柴薪等，都均取材於此。舟船文化在達悟文化之中的地位，是代表著團結的意識，所生產的物品以及生存的工具。而船面的雕刻，紋飾為波浪形紋、三角紋、人形紋、渦卷紋以及內部三角波形狀同心輪形之太陽眼紋。
