傳說中太魯閣族以中央山脈的白石山腰上的大石柱為發詳地。約在三、四百年前，才開始陸續翻越中央山脈來到東部的立霧溪、木瓜溪、陶賽溪等地區。因族人自稱為Truku（太魯閣），所以遷移的居住地區，才叫「太魯閣地區」，這就是太魯閣名稱的由來。這個地區，是現在的太魯閣國家公園範圍之內。目前太魯閣族居於花蓮縣秀林、萬榮、卓鄉、吉安及南投縣仁愛鄉一帶，其文化習俗與泰雅族相似甚多。
太魯閣族與泰雅族神話有些是相同的，也隱約指出，泰雅族與太魯閣族之間的脈絡雖分而聯的情形。
