遠古時代，太魯閣的先祖們不堪連年飢荒、瘟疫之苦，決定舉社遷離集結在濁水溪上源布渡堤岸的溪畔，向他們的益友─飛禽走獸們求助。
飛禽走獸認為太魯閣族因為沒有族規、社會規範的原因，才常遭受天災，於是牠們決定誰能將布拉尤山頂上的巨岩搬來，誰就成為太魯閣族的族規以及社會規範的根源，並要求太魯閣族的後代子孫恪守遵循。
競技進行中，有的知難而退、有的試舉不成，最後剩下烏鴉、紅嘴黑鵯及繡眼畫眉三組人馬比賽，但是烏鴉及紅嘴黑鵯都不成功，輪到最後一組繡眼畫眉。
太魯閣族露絕望，因為巨岩的體積、重量比繡眼畫眉多了千萬倍。但繡眼畫眉一組人馬不為所動。在一陣陣si-si、si-si-si…的鳴叫聲中，繡眼畫眉眾志成城的振翅向上提拉，最後神蹟般的將哪座巨岩，由布拉尤之山頂凌空越溪搬移到人獸聚集的濁水溪畔，自此繡眼畫眉在大家的見証下，成了太魯閣族族規、社會規範的根源。
