太魯閣族衣服的色係以白色為主，先穿一件白色無袖上衣，在套上白色袖套，下身穿著白色單片式長裙，身上的衣服遍佈多色夾織的幾何形花紋，圍腰帶，著白色護腳步，開口向前，有時也披一件白色織布披肩。
太魯閣族織布之色彩以藍、黃、紅、黑、白組成，運用白色作布底，族人擅長以簡單的顏色創造出彩色斑斕的熱鬧織品。
太魯閣族的織物紋樣喜歡在白色布底織上菱形紋及橫條紋，加以組合變化，但在變化中，又因經緯佈局的規則性，讓紋樣呈現一致的規律和色紋節奏，織布者有依循的織紋，代代相傳形成文化的約制，讓婦女在織藝傳承上清楚知道哪些是可變，哪些又是不可變的。
太魯閣族人相信死後要歸回祖靈之地，據說他們服飾中多彩的橫紋，是象徵通往祖先福地的彩虹橋，而一連串多變的菱形紋，代表眼睛，代表無數祖靈的庇佑。
