在中古世紀，鄒族曾居住在台灣中南部的廣大的區域，後來因為其它民族擴展的影響，如受到布農族的南移、1600年以後漢族入墾及西拉雅平埔族的內遷、布農族蠶食等等互動因素的影響，鄒族不得不移動，以致他們居住的活動範圍逐漸縮小成現今所及的有限地域與局勢。
鄒族人現今的居住分布以嘉義縣阿里山鄉一帶的山區為主，以曾文溪流域與濁水溪上游流域為中心，東方在中央山脈的玉山山麓與布農族的勢力範圍接壤，西邊與嘉南平原的漢族為鄰，南方則與魯凱族毗鄰。另外少數聚落分佈在高雄、南投二縣境內，與布農族人混居。
北鄒群又稱為阿里山群。勢力及於曾文溪上游及陳有蘭溪左岸的楠子腳萬（現為南投久美社區）一帶。北鄒群現分屬於嘉義縣的阿里山鄉及南投縣的信義鄉。
北鄒群分佈在嘉義縣阿里山山脈一帶的有達邦社、依拇諸社、特富野社以及分布於南投縣信義鄉境陳有蘭溪支流和社溪西岸山地久美社區的魯富都社等。
南鄒族與北鄒族相互對映著，南鄒群居住地於高雄縣三民鄉與桃源鄉，與布農族混居。高雄縣三民鄉的卡那卡那富群和沙阿魯阿群合稱之為「南鄒」。
位於高雄縣三民鄉境內高屏溪支流楠梓仙溪流域山地的卡那卡那富群，在清代稱為「干仔霧」或「簡仔霧」，即民生、民權、民族之村。
